INDIANAPOLIS, IN (June 2, 2015) - The American Red Cross is launching its first Giving Day Tuesday and asking Hoosiers to make a donation during the 24-hour period.
Red Cross Giving Day is a 24-hour national fundraising campaign supporting the work of the Red Cross. The theme of Giving Day is “All In One Day.”
Online donations are tracked by zip code, so Hoosier donations will help other Hoosiers, says Ann Gregson with the Indianapolis Region of the American Red Cross.
"We're out there every day helping people," said Gregson. "It’s either a single family fire, and we had several over the weekend, or it could be blood donations. It could be a first aid or CPR class teaching people lifesaving skills. Could be water safety. Unfortunately we've had some drownings lately."
"Sometimes people don’t think of us except in major disasters, but we’re there every day helping people prevent, prepare for and respond to life’s emergencies," she said.
In the past year, American Red Cross in the Indiana Region has:
• Received 80,097 lifesaving blood and platelet donations
• Responded to 1,556 local disasters including home fires
• Mobilized 4,039 volunteers
• Provided 192,521 services in our community
• Trained 77,728 people in CPR, First Aid, AED and life-saving water safety skills
