INDIANAPOLIS (July 15, 2015) – Police were investigating after someone scrawled messages in crayon on the USS Indianapolis Memorial downtown.

According to retired Brig. Gen. J. Stewart Goodwin, executive director of the Indiana War Memorials Commission, someone discovered the graffiti early Wednesday morning. The memorial is located along the canal at 692 Ellsworth St.

“(There are) really no words to explain how I feel,” Goodwin said. “Those that have worn the uniform deserve this monument.”

Goodwin said words written on the memorial included, “stop,” “gun,” “crack cocaine” and “Toby Keith’s 35 greatest hits.”

Indianapolis Metropolitan and Capitol police were investigating.
