NWS confirms two tornado touchdowns in Tippecanoe County

TIPPECANOE COUNTY, Ind. (July 18, 2015) — The National Weather Service has confirmed an EF 1 tornado touched down in Tippecanoe County Friday.  Weather officials believe the same tornado may have been responsible for two touchdowns southeast of Lafayette.

Wind speed was measured around 97 miles per hour in the area.  The tornado touched down near the intersection of US52 and County Road 900 S, which is southeast of Lafayette.  Another touchdown was confirmed near the same area.

NWS crews observed several hardy trees like oaks downed in the area, as well as a collapsed garage.

The tornado was part of a powerful storm system that moved through the county Friday evening. Officials report at least 30 homes were damaged.
