LAWRENCE, Ind. (July 21, 2015)-- Police say a suspect is in custody after a stabbing at an L.A. Fitness center in Lawrence.
Officers were called to 9930 Pendleton Pike around 3:15 p.m. on a report of a person stabbed.
The 20-year-old victim was working out and according to witnesses, was "ambushed" and stabbed once in the back.
"Every indication is that this was a targeted event and not a random event at all," said Captain Gary Woodruff, Lawrence Police Department.
The victim was located and transported to a hospital in critical condition. Police say the suspect, Bryan Fearman, 22, was located in the 5500 block of Purpura Drive, about a block away. A weapon was recovered.
Fearman already had a warrant out for his arrest for an intimidation charge.
"He jumped my neighbors fence, went in the back and was tackled right there by my privacy fence," said Chris Shephard.
Fearman was apprehended near Shephard's backyard.
"My dogs are watch dogs, so it wouldn't have been to pretty for him but then again he might have gotten what he deserved so lucky him," said Shephard.
Woodruff says the victim is still in critical condition following surgery.
"If you come to a gym, you shouldn't have to worry about violence,"said Brandon Walker,an LA Fitness member.
Police said Fearman and victim knew each other, and the attack was not random. Fearman is preliminary charged with attempted murder.
Nearby National Guard centers were briefly placed on lockdown as a precaution.
