INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (August 10. 2015)– Police say a man was arrested Sunday after a 6-year-old boy was struck by a stray bullet while riding in a car.

On Saturday, at 9:20 a.m., officers responded to a report of a person shot at Westlane Road and Harcourt Road on the city’s north side. Police say the victim was driven to West 73rd Street and Ditch Road where the victim was located inside a car. The driver of the car was present and not harmed.

Police say the 6-year-old boy had been shot in the back of his neck. He was transported to Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health in serious but stable condition.

Just before 6 p.m. Sunday, investigators detained a suspect in the shooting. After an interview with officers, Sergio Garcia Zarates, 35, was arrested and preliminarily charged with aggravated battery, criminal recklessness and carrying a handgun without a license.
