INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (September 24, 2015) - Experts say now is the time to prepare homes for the brutally cold winter weather.
The first thing to do is check the home’s furnace.
After turning it on, if any unusual sounds are made, like continuous clicking or if the burner kicks off and on repeatedly, call a professional for service.
Experts say it’s normal to notice a burning smell the first few times a furnace is turned on. If that continues, though, call to have repaired.
Also, with so much technology in new furnaces, homeowners may want to call in a professional to check it out regardless of problems or concerns.
“When the service techs come out, they check the flames in it, they check the boiler speed, the gas pressure,” said Dave Mejean with B&W Plumbing and Heating. “After hours, late nights, weekends, it could become pretty expensive to where if you catch it now, well even if it needs replaced, it can all be done ahead of time, now you’ve got a good peace of mind that you’re ready for the winter.”
Other things homeowners are encouraged to do:
• Change furnace filters every 30-60 days
• Close crawl space vents
• Check caulking around windows
• Reverse ceiling fans
• Clean out gutters
• Turn off exterior faucets
