INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (December 3, 2015)- Monument Circle is a must-see destination for many Hoosiers during the holidays.

It’s been that way for more than 50 years, but help is needed to keep this holiday tradition shining brightly.

Each year 52 strands of garland and more than 4,000 lights are strung from the top of the Soldiers and Sailors Monument.

Toy soldiers also line the monument.

Officials with Downtown Indy say it will cost $500,000 to replace and update all of the lights and decorations.

The last major update to the decorations was nearly 20 years ago, and organizers say the popular holiday display is starting to show serious signs of aging.

“We can do piecemeal and replace bulbs as the union electricians do year after year, but for a total replacement and to take advantage of new technology it’s not an insignificant amount,” said Bob Schultz, Sr. VP of Marketing for Downtown Indy.

The easiest way to contribute to this campaign is by texting the word “LIGHTS” to 27722 or click here to donate online.

The fundraising effort will continue until $500,000 is raised.

Individuals who donate more than $100 will receive a light currently hanging on the tree that will be converted into a keepsake ornament.
