(Jan. 21, 2016) – As the temperature drops in the winter, your heating bills will go up. But this is also the time of year where you can save big bucks on items for your home.
“We have dozens of items that are now 50% off or more! They are often ‘one of a kind’ items that were probably special orders or returns. That means we are looking to get rid of them. There are multiple items like that throughout the store. Pretty much every department has something,” said Todd Byczek, store manager at Lowe’s.
Byczek says the end of January is their fiscal year end. That means they don't want to carry over items into this year. That also applies to many other retailers.
And here's something very few know about some big box stores: this time of year, you can sometimes bargain down prices!
“It’s true. There may be some items we are truly looking to get rid of, so it may be worth your while to at least ask because the worst thing that happens is we say we can't do it or yes we can,” said Byczek.
One thing people want to save big on this time of year is their heating bill. One good way to do that is to insulate around windows and doors.
“The average home loses 10% of its heat through leaking doors and windows,” Byczek said.
One easy way to save money is to buy an insulation kit for windows and doors.
“It keeps the cold air out, the heat in, and it can save you probably $200 for just $15,” said Paul Patrick, an assistant store manager at Lowe’s.
Here’s another savings idea: if you want a particular place in your house warmer, but don't need to heat up the entire house, use a space heater.
“One of the best heaters to buy is a Quartz or infrared device. It will heat up the humidity in the air so it's not going to dry out the room. It's going to heat up a room that's up to a 1,000 square feet, and if they tip over they automatically turn off,” said Byczek.
But savings won't mean anything if you don't think about safety. Read the instructions and turn them off when you go to bed because you can’t monitor a space heater when you’re asleep.
The other tip is to buy a programmable thermostat to set your home temperature for coming and going. You can also buy a more expensive Wi-Fi controlled thermostat that allows you to control your thermostat from your smart phone. That can save you money by allowing you to turn down the heat until you are about to return home.
