INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (January 28, 2016) -- A violent night in Indianapolis results in 4 shootings, leaving 2 people dead and 2 others hurt, including a 14-year-old boy.
Police responded to the first shooting of the night on the city’s near northeast side around 10:30 p.m.
Police only learned about that victim when someone showed up to police roll call and reported finding the man lying in the street.
When officers arrived in the 3000 block of Eastern Avenue, they found a 39-year-old man suffering from a gunshot wound.
The victim was taken to IU Health Methodist Hospital in critical condition, and later died at the hospital.
A second shooting occurred on the city’s northeast side just after 11:30 p.m.
IMPD officers were working off-duty employment at Meadowlark Apartments when they heard gunshots.
A 27-year-old told police he had been shot. The victim was transported to Eskenazi with non-life threatening injuries.
A third person was shot around 12:30 a.m. Thursday on the city's near west side.
In that case a 14-year-old was walking down the street near his home and was shot 3 times in the leg.
“It hurts so bad because I didn`t think it would happen to me and my baby,” said the victim’s mother Shronda Hayden.
Hayden is emotional after spending all night at Eskenazi hospital with her son who narrowly avoided being killed.
“It`s a blessing my baby is still alive and he`s doing good,” said Hyden.
Hayden’s son Darrell Avery is recovering from the gunshots, but the motive for the shooting remains a mystery.
“I`m really angry because it`s not fair. My son didn`t do anything to anyone,” said Hayden.
Police believe the victim had been walking home when he was confronted by multiple suspects.
The teen got scared and took off running but got shot in the back of the leg before he made it home.
“He just came in in a panic and showed me he had been shot,” said Hayden. “My son could've died last night. He really could have died last night.”
The fourth shooting took place around 1:30 a.m. Thursday on Indy’s northeast side near 42nd Street and North Mitthoefer Road.
In that case, an 18-year-old identified as Da’Michael Forrest, was found dead inside an empty apartment.
“It`s ridiculous and it needs to quit,” said Hayden. “The guns need to go right now. When you got people shooting up kids, it don`t make no sense.”
IMPD is investigating these shooting as separate incidents, and have not yet made any arrests. Police urge anyone with information about these shootings to call Crime Stoppers at 317-262-TIPS (8477).
