COLDEST IN WEEKS
Winter looks alive and well on this Tuesday evening. Bundle up - the coldest afternoon in 3 weeks will turn into the coldest night since January 21st.
Snow showers as expected became more vigorous throughout the afternoon and evening. Locally a half inch to one is is possible under the more robust snow showers and squalls. These snow showers are selective, much like yesterday bringing temporary reduced visibility and becoming very slippery underneath them. Icy and numerous slick spots are expected overnight.
FRESH COATING OF SNOW
Some snowfall amounts we as high as 2" in Greenwood after three snow showers passed overhead during the evening commute. Area snowfall was not evenly distributed as forecast, ranging from a dusting to 1"+ in spots. Officially the city total is .5" for the day and .8" for a two day total. Currently we are nearly 11" below normal snowfall for the season.
The snow showers are driven by upper air circulation around a cold, low pressure combined with the afternoon 'heating' of the day. Once the sun sets, the coverage and intensity of the snow showers will diminish.
BITTER WIND CHILL EARLY WEDNESDAY MORNING
The temperatures keep falling as we import the polar air. Down from the same time Monday we have dipped wind chill temperatures into the single digits. Low temperatures tonight could reach the high single digits but combined with a stiff breeze the wind chill will lower below zero at times by Wednesday morning.
NEW AND STRONGER COLD SURGE FOR THE WEEKEND
A lull from the snow Thursday with a few snow chances still being monitored entering the weekend. Snow via clipper system is possible Friday along with a fresh batch of arctic air. The cold hitting early Saturday will keep area temperatures in the teens Saturday afternoon, 20° to 24° below normal.
VALENTINE'S DAY SNOW POSSIBLE
The early take on Sunday is a chance of snow, along with one of the colder Valentine's days on record. I'm posting the latest US model weather map for Sunday night. Still up for debate on snow and possible amounts. Stay tuned for more as the weekend picture becomes more clear though the week.
