INDIANAPOLIS (February 12, 2016) – A local teen is being hailed a hero after saving a family’s dog from a frozen pond.
Authorities responded to a call for help near the intersection of Southport and Bluff roads on Indy’s south side just before 7 p.m. Thursday.
Officials say an 8-year-old poodle named “Lazy” wandered onto a frozen pond and fell through the ice. When the dog’s owners realized what had happened, they frantically called 911.
As the family waited for rescue crews to arrive, officials say a 15-year-old neighbor went outside to help wearing only a t-shirt, shorts and boots.
According to emergency crews, the teen used a paddle boat to go out onto the icy pond to rescue the dog.
After getting the dog safely in the boat, authorities say the teen’s boat got stuck on the water. It took fire crews over half an hour to pull the boat to safety using a rope.
Both the teen and the dog made it to shore safely and are expected to be OK.
