Irish stop Stephen F. Austin, advance to Sweet 16
Rex Pflueger tipped in a Zach Auguste miss with 1.5 seconds remaining as six-seed Notre Dame beat 14-seed Stephen F. Austin 76-75 in Brooklyn, Sunday afternoon.
The win puts the Irish back in the Sweet 16 for the second year in a row and gives the ACC five Sweet 16 teams, tying a tournament record for a conference in a year. Syracuse has a chance to break that record later Sunday night if the 10-seed Orange can beat 15-seed Middle Tennessee. Overall, the ACC is 11-1 in this year’s NCAA Tournament, the only loss coming from 10-seed Pittsburgh against seven-seed Wisconsin.
Demetrius Jackson led the Irish with 18 points on the day. Zach Auguste (16) and V.J. Beachem (15) also tallied double-figures.
Notre Dame will play the winner of seven-seed Wisconsin and two-seed Xavier in the Sweet 16 on March 25 in Philadelphia.
