Police: Peru couple found passed out in running car with 4-year-old daughter

PERU, Ind. (April 21, 2016) – A Peru couple was arrested after they were found passed out in a running car with their 4-year-old daughter in the backseat.

According to court documents, deputies were dispatched to the intersection of North Elm Street and East Main Street at around 3 p.m. Tuesday on a report of two people passed out in a vehicle.

When they arrived on scene, they found two adults, Stephine Troyer 24, of Peru, and Jason Troyer, 26, of Peru, passed out in a car. Stephine was in the driver’s seat and her head was leaning against the steering wheel; Jason was in the passenger seat and his head was leaning back. The car was running and in gear with Stephine’s foot on the brake pedal. Their four-year-old daughter was in the backseat and not restrained.

Officers opened the car door, turned the vehicle off, and woke the couple up.

According to court docs, there was a smoking device on Jason’s lap. Police said Jason was lethargic, his sentences didn’t make sense, his dexterity was extremely low, and he had to be helped to walk.

A K9 was brought to the scene, and the dog found spice in the car and burnt spice in a smoking device.

Stephine and Jason were arrested and transported to the Miami County Jail. Stephine faces charges of operating while intoxicated endangering, neglect of a dependent and possession of paraphernalia. Jason faces charges of public intoxication and possession of paraphernalia.
