PENDLETON, Ind. – An inmate from the Pendleton Correctional Facility died in the hospital after barricading himself inside his cell Monday.

According to Pendleton Correctional Facility Superintendent Dushan Zatecky, the inmate, 32-year-old Justin Addler, brandished a weapon in his cell and barricaded himself inside around 1:15 p.m. He ignored orders to release the weapon. Officials wouldn’t disclose what kind of weapon Addler had, citing the ongoing investigation.

The Cell Extraction Team was called in; Addler voluntarily submitted to restraints and was moved to the Health Care Center for medical treatment. He was then moved to a hospital observation cell.

Staff later found him unresponsive and initiated life-saving procedures. An ambulance took him to St. Vincent Anderson Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 4:17 p.m.

Zatecky said Addler, a Crawfordsville native, was serving time for dealing cocaine and carrying a handgun without a license for a case in Tippecanoe County. He was set to be released in April 2026.

The facility’s information and intelligence office, Indiana State Police and Madison County Coroner’s Office are investigating Addler’s death. An autopsy and toxicology tests will be conducted to determine the cause of death.
