RIPLEY COUNTY, Ind. – A motorcyclist died after a crash near Versailles in Ripley County Friday night.

Indiana State Police responded to the crash on US 50 near US 421 just before 6 p.m.

Police say Daniel Griest, 44, was riding his Harley-Davidson motorcycle eastbound when he crossed the center line, into the path of a westbound 2016 Chevrolet Traverse, being driven by Michael Rompies, 34.

The two vehicles collided nearly head on, causing Griest to be thrown from the motorcycle. He sustained massive injuries and was flown by medical helicopter to a Cincinnati area hospital, where he later died.

Rompies, along with the four passengers in his vehicle sustained very minor injuries.

Police say Griest was not wearing a helmet and the motorcycle’s speed may be a contributing factor to the crash.

Traffic on US 50 was affected for approximately two hours while the crash was investigated and cleared.

The Griest family has been notified.  The investigation is ongoing.
