Suspect charged after woman is critically injured in police chase on southwest side

UPDATE: Christopher Glassel pleaded guilty to resisting law enforcement and failure to remain at the scene of an accident on Jan. 23, 2017. His other charges were dismissed. 

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – A woman was critically injured in a single-vehicle crash during a police pursuit on the southwest side Saturday afternoon.

The pursuit started around 3:45 p.m. when the suspect’s car took off as police tried to make a traffic stop near Holt and Morris. The pursuit headed west on Washington Street near I- 465 and onto several streets near the airport.

Officers had initially lost sight of the vehicle and then found it crashed in the 1800 block of Sigsbee Street.

Police say two men in the car took off on foot. A female passenger was found severely injured outside the vehicle. She was taken to Eskenazi Hospital in critical condition, with an injury to her upper body, possibly her head or neck.

A perimeter was established and one man was apprehended near the area where the pursuit ended. The second suspect was apprehended at a Shell gas station in the 7000 block of West Washington Street and sent to Eskenazi Hospital to be checked for injuries.

One of the suspects, Christopher Glassel, 32, has been charged with resisting and driving while suspended with a prior.

The investigation is being handled by IMPD’s hit and run unit.
