LAPORTE COUNTY, Ind. –Driver error may have been the contributing factor into a deadly crash Monday just after 3 p.m.

According to Indiana State Police, a semi from Rome, New York,  was traveling eastbound on the Indiana Toll Road just east of the US 421 exit when it encountered slow traffic backing up due to a construction work zone.

A second semi, coming from Joliet, Illinois, traveling to Maryland, failed to slow down and stop and ran into the rear of the trailer of the first semi.

That semi then caught fire and became fully engulfed, trapping the driver inside. The driver of that semi was later pronounced dead at the scene by the La Porte County coroner. The driver of the first semi was taken to a Michigan City hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The eastbound lanes were closed for almost six hours after the crash.
