INDIANAPOLIS,  Ind.–  Rescue crews rushed to the scene of a vehicle that went into the water at a west side apartment complex Saturday.

Shortly after 9:30 p.m., emergency crews were called to the 7200 block of Islander Drive in the Mariner’s Village Apartments.

Witnesses say an SUV went into the water with two people inside.  The vehicle was located approximately 25 feet from the shore, submerged in about 6 feet of water.

The 17-year-old female made it back to shore and was taken to a St. Vincent Hospital.

The 18 year-old male driver, Jachai Edwards, was recovered from the water around 10: 21 p.m.  Authorities say Edwards had been submerged for close to 40 minutes.  He was located outside the vehicle, was unconscious, without a pulse and not breathing when they removed him from the water.  He was transported to Methodist where he was reported deceased.

Shortly after the vehicle went into the water, frantic bystanders began jumping in and out of the water to help.  Authorities say this made the situation more difficult for rescue crews as a crowd converged on the scene and became unruly toward the firefighters.   IMPD officers were called to assist with crowd control.

The vehicle was recovered from the water and investigators continue to look into what caused the vehicle to go into the large pond.
