INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The son of Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett was arrested on drug charges last week.

According to police, William Hogsett, 18, was arrested on Friday, July 1. Police say they observed a vehicle crossing the center line, and they pulled the car over on the west side of Rushville on Old State Road 44.

According to the affidavit, the officer pulled the driver over and smelled marijuana inside the car.

Hogsett was driving the car with two passengers inside.

Court records claim Hogsett showed signs of impairment and admitted, “He smoked marijuana ‘this morning’… but doesn’t normally have marijuana in his car.”

Police described the amount of drugs found in the car as a dime bag of marijuana with less than 30 grams, as well as a marijuana pipe.

Still, the Rushville police chief says the law is the law.

“It`s still illegal in the state of Indiana to possess marijuana and probably will be for some time.  I think the charges they`re facing are misdemeanor charges,” said Rushville police chief Craig Tucker.

“Any amount of drug is going to be enough to convict you of possession of that drug,” said attorney Chris Eskew.

Attorney Eskew says as a first time offender, William Hogsett will likely face minimal punishment, which is common.

“Ultimately I think it will work out the same for Mr. Hogsett than it would for anybody else,” said Eskew.

The arresting officers said Hogsett was cooperative at the time of the arrest. His vehicle was impounded and towed from the scene.

He was taken to Rush County Jail where he later posted bail money and was released. The two passengers face the same charges as Hogsett.

According to the affidavit, the officer pulled the driver over and smelled marijuana inside the car.

Mayor Hogsett’s spokeswoman released the following statement:

“Of the many things Joe Hogsett is responsible for, the most important is serving as a father to his family. And as a former prosecutor with a deep respect for the rule of law, he appreciates the seriousness of this matter. Obviously, Joe will continue to spend the coming days with his teenage son as he and his family address this disappointing incident.”
