One more traffic signal to be eliminated on U.S. 31 construction in Tipton
TIPTON, Ind. — Just when you thought your drive north along U.S. 31 around Tipton couldn’t get any slower, guess again.
Starting Monday, July 25, construction will begin at State Road 28 and U.S. 31 where a new roundabout will be installed. Access from State Road 28 across and to U.S. 31 will be unavailable for the next four months.
After the closure of State Road 28, the existing traffic signal on U.S. 31 will be removed. Combined with the previously completed U.S. 31 Major Moves projects in Hamilton County, Kokomo and South Bend, more than 33 traffic signals will have been removed from U.S. 31 north of Indianapolis.
During the closure of State Road 28, a signed detour will direct highway traffic north to State Road 26 via State Road 29 and State Road 19. Local motorists are encouraged to plan ahead and seek their best alternate routes. U.S. 31 will be reduced to one lane in each direction through the completion of the project. The speed limit will remain reduced to 50 mph through the work zone.
Access to the Fiat-Chrysler Automotive plant will remain available from the existing entrance off State Road 28 until the new interchange is open to traffic. During the closure of State Road 28 at U.S. 31, access to FCA will only be available from the east side of U.S. 31.
All new traffic configurations, including the new interchange ramps and State Road 28 access over U.S. 31, are expected to open in November.
