KOKOMO, Ind. – Two people died and a 2-year-old was injured after police say their vehicle left the roadway, struck a pole and caught on fire in Kokomo early Saturday morning.

When police and fire crews responded to the crash at the intersection of Alto Road and Webster Street around 12:15, the vehicle was still on fire. That fire was extinguished and officials began working to free the occupants.

The driver of the 2008 Chevrolet Cobalt, Juan Carlos Alfaro, 24, was extricated and sent to Community Howard Emergency, where he later died. A passenger, Britney Pitzer, 28, was pronounced dead on scene. A 2-year-old boy was extricated from the vehicle. He was air lifted to Riley Hospital for Children, where he is listed in stable condition.

This crash remains under investigation by the Howard County Coroner’s office and the Kokomo Police Department.
