INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The grades are in and Indiana received a D-. A national study graded every state for the laws they do and do not have to protect families and women in the workplace.
According to the study put out by the National Partnership for Women and Families, Indiana is among the worst states in the nation for giving workers sick and maternity leave.
“I’m not surprised and we’re not alone, there are a number of other states that offer very little in terms of benefits, protections for working moms,” said mom and political strategist, Jennifer Wagner.
“There are small steps that can be taken that would have a huge effect on the lives of working women, new moms, and families,” she said.
Her home state of Indiana got a D- in a study looking at states that provide benefits like paid maternity and sick leave. The group graded each state on how many workplace policy laws they have that give workers paid sick and maternity leave, or provide protections for pregnant employees.
Paid leave is not required in Indiana.
According to the study, over one million Hoosiers can’t earn a single paid sick day. But only 37 percent of Hoosiers are eligible for or can even afford unpaid sick leave. When it comes to maternity leave, nearly one in four Hoosier women return to work within two weeks of giving birth.
“If you had a lot more women at the state level in politics, you’d have seen this sooner. That’s true on both sides of the aisle. There are a lot of men in statehouses that don’t understand these issues affect them and affect their families,” said Wagner.
“Reducing costs in child care, offering much needed relief to American families,” said Republican Presidential Candidate Donald Trump during an economic agenda announcement earlier this week.
Trump has advocated for affordable child care, a not so republican idea, just weeks after his daughter, Ivanka Trump promoted workplace equality for women on stage at the RNC.
“At my father’s company, women are paid equally for the work that they do,” she said.
Democratic Presidential Candidate Hillary Clinton has advocated for mandatory paid maternity leave and has called for closing the gender wage gap as well.
