Hazmat crash in Jasper County shuts down I-65
JASPER COUNTY, Ind.– State Police and Hazmat teams worked an early Tuesday morning crash along Interstate 65 in Jasper County where a tractor-trailer caught fire just before 2 a.m. The fire was reported fire at I-65 at the 223 mile marker which is approximately 7 miles south of Roselawn, IN.
The early part of the investigation revealed that the tractor and dual trailer owned by R & L Transfer Inc (Wilmington, OH) and driven by Darius Lofton, age 27, (Chicago, IL) sustained a brake fire to the rear trailer. Lofton was able to pull over to the right shoulder and attempted to extinguish the fire. His attempt to extinguish the fire was unsuccessful with the fire continuing to burn. Lofton then unhitched his cab from the trailer and pulled it forward while the trailer became engulfed.
The trailer was loaded with 55 gallon barrels of sodium hydroxide and phosphonium chloride. All lanes of I-65 were shut down because of the fire.
North bound lanes have reopened however southbound traffic is being diverted at State Road 10. Motorists should use alternative routes as I-65 southbound lanes will remain closed for several hours for the hazardous material cleanup.
