INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — An officer-involved shooting left a man in serious condition on the near south side of Indianapolis.

Officers responded to the scene, located just east of the Regent Street and Union Street intersection, around 6 p.m. Thursday.

Police say a man in the 50 block of East Regent Street matched the description of a suspect wanted in connection with a stolen Saturn car from Johnson County. Police identified him Friday as 31-year-old Jacob Wessel.

When officers approached the vehicle, Wessel fled behind a house. IMPD said he displayed a gun and began to raise it at officers. Two officers fired, striking him at least once.

Wessel was taken in serious condition to Eskenazi Hospital; police said Friday that Wessel has been released from intensive care. Preliminary charges against him include auto theft, possession of narcotics and resisting law enforcement. He’ll also face a firearms charge, police said.

Wessel is no stranger to police; he made headlines in October 2015 when he broke into an Indianapolis home. The woman who lived there punched him in the face and held him captive with a sword until police arrived. At the time, police said Wessel was high on an unknown substance.

IMPD says no officers were injured in the shooting.

Police recovered a gun and what appeared to be narcotics from Wessel. They also confirmed that the car was stolen.

The involved officers will be placed on administrative leave pending the conclusion of the investigation.
