Carmel drivers prepare for busy week as 150K spectators arrive for BMW Golf Championship

CARMEL, Ind.-  Drivers are getting ready for a busy week in Carmel as 150,000 spectators arrive to attend the BMW Golf Championship at Crooked Stick Golf Course.

“We have a parking and transportation plan we've been working on for a couple years now,” said Tournament Director Vince Pellegrino.

Weather permitting, spectators will need to park about 4 miles away from the course.

“Tuesday through Friday we're going to park at 146th St and Towne. That's for all the general spectators and they're going to get shuttled to the tournament,” said Pellegrino.

This is the same plane to tournament used when it was last here in 2012.

Towne Road will be closed from 141st Street to 146th Street, and 146th Street will be restricted to one lane in the area.

All parking and shuttle services are free, but if there’s rain, spectators will be parking a lot further away.

“If we get inclement weather we're going to change that parking plan Tuesday through Friday to the old airport at Sam Jones Expressway and 465. The best thing to do is to check the website before you come,” said Pellegrino.

For the third and fourth rounds on Saturday and Sunday, parking will be the same rain or shine.

Parking will be at CNO financial on Pennsylvania Street just east of the golf course.

If you’re taking Uber, taxi, or getting dropped off by a friend, the pick-up and drop-off location is on Towne Rd near 106th Street.

Good news if you drive a BMW, Pellegrino says BMW owners will have preferred parking closer to tournament.  You’ll need to go to the championship website to sign up.

If you’re not going to the tournament, the Carmel Police Department is encouraging drivers to avoid the area. Your best alternate routes are State Road 32 to the north, US-31 to the east, State Road 421 to the west and I-465 to the south.
