Police: 13-year-old killed in officer-involved shooting in Ohio had BB gun

COLUMBUS, Ohio – A 13-year-old who died Wednesday night after a confrontation with officers in Columbus, Ohio, was carrying a BB gun, police say.

Tyree King died around 8:20 p.m., less than an hour after an officer shot him multiple times, according to the Columbus Police Department.

Officers were investigating a reported armed robbery Wednesday night involving multiple suspects near S. 18th Street and E. Capital Street. Around 7:40 p.m., officers were dispatched to the area, where a victim told police several young men approached them with a gun and demanded money.

Officers saw three people matching the description of the suspects on nearby Hoffman Street. When they tried to talk to them, two of them ran off into an alley. Police gave chase and tried to take them into custody. One of them, King, pulled a gun from his waistband, police said.

An officer opened fire, hitting King multiple times. King went to Nationwide Children’s Hospital, where he later died.

Further investigation showed King’s handgun was actually a BB gun with an attached laser sight.

Columbus police said the case remains under investigation and were looking for additional suspects.
