Alligator found along I-465 dies after possibly being thrown from vehicle

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Most Indiana drivers are used to spotting deer or the occasional possum in the road, but most don’t expect to come across an alligator.

That’s exactly what people saw traveling down northbound I-465 in southeast Indianapolis Sunday afternoon.

Indiana State Police were called to investigate the alligator sightings near the 48 mile marker around 2:30 p.m. When they arrived, they found the two-foot gator injured along the road.

Sgt. John Perrine documented the moment he picked the gator up to stop it from running into the road.

Sadly, before animal control arrived on scene, the alligator died from its injuries that police believe were a result of it being thrown or falling from a moving vehicle. Police are working with the department of natural resources to dispose of the scaly creature.

It’s unknown how the gator got onto the highway. Anyone with information is asked to call the Indiana State Police at 317-899-8577.
