Man arrested in connection with fatal east side shooting over video game

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – A man is facing a murder charge for his alleged involvement in the shooting death of a man over a video game.

On Aug. 31, police say a Christopher Cooksey, 23, was part of a large group of people arguing over a game when someone shot and killed Deandre Johnson, 22.

Officers found Johnson when they responded to the shooting in the 3700 block of East Market Street, He was transported to Eskenazi Hospital in critical condition and later died from his injuries.

On Sept. 16, detectives conducted surveillance in the 1300 block of Riley Place after receiving information that Cooksey was there, who they were actively searching for to question about Johnson’s murder.

Cooksey was taken into custody without incident and transported to the homicide office for questioning. He was then arrested for his alleged involvement in Johnson’s death. He’s facing charges of murder and unlawful possession of a firearm by a serious violent felon.

Cooksey’s booking photo is being withheld as detectives complete their investigation into Johnson’s murder.
