Indiana State Police investigating officer-involved shooting in Lake County
HAMMOND, Ind. – Indiana State Police are investigating an officer-involved shooting that happened in Lake County Sunday night.
According to police, officers were called around 7:20 p.m. to a residence in the 1500 block of 177th Place after someone called to say their friend was suicidal and was making suicidal comments. Police arrived for a welfare check and began talking to 33-year-old Bryan Jones.
Eventually, talks broke down and Jones went back inside his home. Police said Jones fired a gun inside; attempts at further negotiation were unsuccessful. Jones later came outside with a shotgun and handgun, police said.
A Hammond police officer shot Jones after he lowered the shotgun toward officers, state police said. Jones was taken to Munster Community Hospital.
No one else was hurt during the encounter, police said.
Indiana State Police said the shooting would take “some time” to investigate. The case will be forwarded to the Lake County Prosecutor’s Office once the investigation is complete.
