INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) has awarded a $4.6 million contract to Proshot Concrete for maintenance and modernization of the Interstate 65 bridges spanning the north side of downtown Indianapolis from Senate Avenue to Alabama Street.

Work is underway underneath the bridges, including concrete patching, painting steel and wrapping bridge piers with a fiber-reinforced plastic to protect and strengthen the structure.

Construction on the bridge decks above is scheduled to begin Sunday, Oct. 2 and will significantly affect overnight traffic.

During a maximum of 20 overnight closures, crews will seal joints between each bridge span to prevent moisture from penetrating and deteriorating the structures’ concrete and steel.  Concrete pavement will also be repaired during the overnight closures.

Northbound I-65 closures

On Sunday, Oct. 2 and Monday, Oct. 3, the northbound I-65 Exit 113 ramps to and from Meridian and Pennsylvania streets will close starting at 9 p.m. until 6 a.m.

On Wednesday, Oct. 5 and Thursday, Oct. 6, work on northbound I-65 will close all lanes between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m.  Nightly closures on northbound I-65 will resume at 9 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 9 through 6 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 14. The Exit 113 ramps to and from Meridian and Pennsylvania Streets will remain open while northbound I-65 is closed.

Advanced warning signs are being installed to direct through traffic – including large trucks – to take I-465 around Indianapolis.

During the overnight closures of northbound I-65:

  • The northbound I-65 Exit 114 ramp to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Street/West Street will close temporarily, and
  • The Pine Street entrance ramp to northbound I-65 will close temporarily.

Southbound I-65 closures

After northbound work is complete, night crews will move to complete similar work on southbound I-65.  Specific dates and closures will be announced as work on northbound I-65 progresses over the next two weeks.

Ramp work will close the southbound I-65 Exit 113 ramps to and from Meridian Street during the weeknights between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m.

Work on southbound I-65 will close all but one lane during the weeknights between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m.  The Exit 113 ramps to and from Pennsylvania and Meridian Streets will remain open while lanes are closed on southbound I-65.

During the overnight lane closures, the entrance ramp from  Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Street/West Street to southbound I-65 will close.
