INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Several large retailers plan to add thousands of seasonal employees this holiday season in central Indiana and more of them are high paying jobs this year, according to Purdue University Professor of Retail Management Richard Feinberg.
As part of a national trend, retailers are hiring less people inside brick and mortar stores and more people in distribution centers, Feinberg said, and in general those jobs tend to pay more.
“Central Indiana looks pretty good,' he said. "Because we have a lot of distributions centers. We have the FedEx people, we have the Amazon people, we have a Walmart distribution center and those places hire a lot of people."
UPS plans to hire nearly 900 people this holiday season in central Indiana and more than 100 of those jobs will pay $30 an hour.
"There are many cities and areas in the United States that don’t have the luxury of having a strong retailing presence in terms of distribution," Feinberg said.
Other retailers looking to add employees this holiday season include JC Penney, 350 jobs, and Meijer, 1,200 jobs. Macy's, Kohls and Target also are in the process of hiring seasonal employees.
Feinberg said if you're looking to get a job this holiday season the most important thing to emphasize on your resume and during your job interview is the ability to deliver exceptional customer service.
"I would even go so far as to get a book on Amazon on customer service and when you go to the interview flop it down on the interview table and you won’t have to say anything because they will see you’re reading about customer service," Feinberg said.
The ability to multitask, flexibility and a positive personality are all other important traits when it comes to seasonal jobs, he said.
Feinberg added added many retailers are hiring right now and said it's good to be proactive in your job search.
