INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- An armed robbery at a local fast food restaurant turns into a shootout Wednesday night. The gunfight broke out at a Burger King on West Washington and ended with 5 teens being arrested for a series of stickups.
Police say three of the suspects attempted to hold up the fast-food restaurant in the 5100 block of West Washington Street around 9 p.m. on Wednesday.
A local firearms instructor saw the crime, confronted the gunmen and then exchanged fire with the suspects in a wild shootout.
“I know exactly what he was going through,” said firearms instructor Ben Chance. “It’s pretty scary because it’s not like you’re shooting at a piece of paper.”
Ben Chance is a local firearms instructor himself who was once critically injured during an armed robbery. He doesn’t know the instructor involved in the Burger King shooting, but says proper firearms training can save lives.
“If you’re going to carry a deadly weapon, you need to know how to use it and when to use it,” said Chance.
Several employees and customers were inside the B-K at the time of the gunfight, but despite numerous rounds being fired, no one got hit in part because the instructor followed one important rule.
“You have to be aware of your surroundings because you don’t know where those bullets are going to go,” said Chance.
The suspects in the Burger King robbery escaped the gunfire and drove away, but were caught by police a short time later.
Investigators at the Burger King praised the firearms instructor for his actions, but say it’s critical all gun owners know when they’re entitled to use deadly force.
“You can’t just use deadly force on somebody that’s not a threat to you. Your life has to be in danger to use deadly force,” said Chance.
Police did not release information on the underage suspects, but IMPD identified the adult suspects as Antonio Cowherd and Mikel Kendrick. Both are 19 years old, police said.
All five suspects have been charged with robbery.
