INDIANAPOLIS — Three renovated exhibits are set to open at the Indiana State Museum in what officials say is the first stage of plans to improve the museum and several historic sites around the state.

The museum in downtown Indianapolis will open the new galleries Nov. 3. Museum official Beth Van Why tells the Indianapolis Business Journal ( ) the renovated exhibits are designed to be more interactive for visitors.

Five more phases of museum renovations are planned by 2019. Officials say that’s part of a $17.8 million plan from state funding and $9 million in private donations.

Van Why says the 11 historic sites the museum oversees will all undergo improvements. They include the Levi Coffin House in Fountain City, where a $3.8 million interpretive center is opening in December.
