IMPD officer hospitalized after early morning crash with intoxicated driver

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – A two-car crash around 1 a.m. Thursday at East Raymond Street & South Keystone Avenue sent an Indianapolis Metropolitan police officer and another driver to area hospitals.

The officer was injured, though it’s unknown how, but is in good condition at IU Health Methodist Hospital. He's a 9-year veteran of the force, according to IMPD.

The other driver was taken to Eskenazi Hospital, where he's being treated and remains in police custody. Police said the man will face a preliminary charge of operating a vehicle while intoxicated.

The initial call was for a crash with injuries; officers arrived to find it involved a fellow officer. Both the officer's car and the driver's Dodge Stratus had to be towed away from the scene.

Police believe the driver ran a red light and hit the officer's car. The officer appeared to be on normal patrol. Police haven’t said when the officer will be able to return to work.
