INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Kendall Langford’s attempted return from knee surgery ended Saturday when the Indianapolis Colts placed their veteran defensive end on the injured reserve list.

It represents the final setback for Langford, who entered the season as one of the NFL’s true iron men. He had appeared in 135 consecutive games, never missing a game in his nine-year career, before the team decided to pull him from the lineup for the Oct. 30 game against Kansas City. It was the league’s longest active streak among defensive linemen.

Langford underwent arthroscopic surgery in early August to address a ‘chondral defect’ in his right knee. He started the first seven games, but seldom was a factor with just 11 tackles.

Prior to the Chiefs’ game, coach Chuck Pagano revealed Langford needed extended rest to fully recover from the injury.

“You guys have watched him play and we have watched him and watched it,’’ he said. “He has been battling through that thing and just never really got right.

“He is a tough, tough guy. He is an iron man. He is a warrior. He wants to play. We just said let’s shut him down for a little bit and get that thing totally healed and calmed down to where he can get back to playing winning football.

The team filled Langford’s spot on the active roster by signing cornerback Christopher Milton from the practice squad.

Milton’s addition likely was in response to veteran cornerback Vontae Davis being added to the injury report with an ankle issue. Davis is questionable for Sunday’s game against the Tennessee Titans.
