INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – A sleeping man safely evacuated his near south side home with his pets after a neighbor informed him that his house was on fire Sunday morning.

Twelve IFD units were dispatched to the home in the 1200 block of McDougal Street around 11:03 a.m. Firefighters had the fire under control by 11:22 a.m.

The resident, 49-year-old Mark Keller, told firefighters that he had no visible signs of smoke or fire inside his home, but when he got outside, the attic space and roof were fully engulfed in flames. Officials say Keller, who’s a post office worker, had no insurance and will stay with relatives.

Battalion Chief Kevin Witt estimates the blaze caused around $35,000 in damage.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
