Dontae Blount

UPDATE (December 6, 2017): A jury found Dontae Blount not guilty of murder and carrying a handgun without a license. He was granted his release from custody.

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Indianapolis Metropolitan police made an arrest after a man was found fatally shot at a gas station earlier this month.

On Dec. 1, Sy-Ayre Kyles, 23, was found dead inside a car at a Speedway gas station located at North High School Road and Rockville Road.

Police arrested Dontae Blount, 23, in connection with Kyles’ death. IMPD’s Violent Crime Unit apprehended Blount less than a week later, questioning him about the case and arresting him on preliminary charges of murder and carrying a handgun without a license. IMPD said one of the motives in the shooting was drugs.

Officers found Kyles inside a parked car with bullet holes in the window. A clerk inside the gas station used the silent “hold up” alarm to alert police to the shooting.

IMPD said tips from the community helped them identify Blount as a suspect in Kyles’ death. Surveillance video and eyewitness accounts also aided the investigation, police said.
