INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – IMPD homicides detectives are investigating a shooting outside of a Popeyes restaurant that killed a 14-year-old boy Monday night.

The Marion County Coroner's Office identified the victim as Anthony Lee Hughes Jr.

Police were called to the scene in the 3000 block of West 16th Street just after 7 p.m. Police told FOX59 that Hughes was found unresponsive in the back parking lot. EMS arrived and rushed him Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health, but he passed away shortly after 8 p.m.

"It was outside the restaurant, it had nothing to do with inside the business," IMPD Capt. Michael Elder said.

Elder said Hughes had just left the restaurant with a friend when he was shot. As of Monday night, police had no suspect or vehicle description, but were talking to a few witnesses who had been on the scene.

The Crime Lab also spent a few hours on scene collecting evidence, and detectives looked for clues.

"(They're) looking (at the surveillance) cameras to see if they’re working. They’re going around and talking to neighbors, other businesses that are open," Elder said.

No one inside the restaurant was injured, and police believe Hughes was shot once in the chest.
