GREENWOOD, Ind.– The Johnson County Sheriff’s office says the 1-year-old girl who was struck Thursday night after being struck by a vehicle backing out of a driveway has passed away.

Deputies were called to the 4700 block of Walker Street, near West Smith Valley Road and South Morgantown Road, around 5:30 p.m. The child was rushed to the hospital, where she was pronounced deceased.

According to the accident report, the 1-year-old girl’s mother was backing her Dodge Durango out of the driveway to make room for another person who was leaving the residence. The girl’s father told police he believed all the children were playing in the yard.

She was given a portable breath test at the scene, and it tested negative for alcohol.

Johnson County Sheriff Doug Cox says the incident appears to be a tragic accident. The sheriff’s office says the girl was just a few days shy of her second birthday.
