Police identify pilot killed after helicopter crash in White County

WHITE COUNTY, Ind. – A pilot died when a helicopter crashed in White County Tuesday afternoon.

State police were called to the crash on County Road 700 South around 3:50 p.m. That’s around three miles north and one and a half miles east of Brookston.

A preliminary investigation has shown the helicopter was assisting a construction company called EC Source put up power lines on new steel light poles when it crashed to the ground for an unknown reason.

Crews reportedly removed the seriously injured pilot from the wreckage and performed CPR, but he died on the scene. State police identified the pilot as Howard Y. Esterbrook, 53, Kapolai, Hawaii.

Police say the National Transportation Board and the FAA have both been contacted.
