UPDATE: SWAT standoff on south side ends with suspect in custody

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.– Police say a man put a gun to his own head inside a vehicle on the city’s south side Wednesday, prompting a SWAT standoff that lasted four hours.

SWAT officers responded to the scene at a public storage facility in the 4300 block of South East Street just after 2 p.m. The storage facility is attached to a movie theater.

The incident started as a very short pursuit. Officers came across the man, who they knew to be wanted, and tried to get him in custody. The man tried to flee and his truck became stuck in mud. He then put a gun to his head. Nobody else was inside the vehicle.

The south end of the theater was emptied out and everyone was asked to leave out of the north end. No injuries were reported.

Police said the suspect, identified as Paul Reese, 29, gave himself up after officers used gas canisters. He’ll be taken to be processed into the jail after he’s treated at the hospital. He was wanted on a felony warrant for fleeing. Additional charges could follow.
