Police at scene on July 6, 2017

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Indianapolis Metropolitan police are investigating a fatal shooting from Thursday night on the north side.

Police responded to the 200 block of W. 38th St. before 5:50 p.m. on a report of a serious shooting.

Officers found a male in his 20s suffering from gunshot wounds. He was taken to Eskenazi Hospital, where he later died.

Police said Thursday that a person was in custody in connection with the shooting. They clarified Friday that the individual called police about the shooting and turned himself in when officers arrived on the scene.

Police recovered two firearms at the scene. The man who turned himself in told investigators that he was defending himself during the confrontation and cooperated with investigators. The man was released after detectives consulted with the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office.

The prosecutor’s office will review the case to determine if charges are warranted.
