UPDATE: Singer Tom Petty dies at age 66 in Los Angeles

UPDATE: Tom Petty died at UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles Monday night.

The news of Petty’s death was reported at 1 p.m. Monday, but doubts began to swirl by 2 p.m.

TMZ originally reported the death, but later retracted its reporting, which had apparently been based on false information from a Los Angeles police official.

The Los Angeles Police Department tweeted it had “no information” about the singer and does not have an “investigative role in this matter.”

TMZ then reported that Petty was “still clinging to life” in the hospital after suffering a heart attack in his Malibu home. The outlet says a chaplain was called into Petty’s hospital room around 10:30 a.m. Monday. The family has a do not resuscitate order on Petty, according to TMZ. Petty was not expected to live through the day.

He died peacefully around 8:40 p.m. local time in LA, according to his manager.
