Man shoots and kills alleged intruder then dials 9-1-1

FRANKFORT, Ind. -- Authorities in Clinton County are investigating a shooting incident from late Tuesday that resulted in a man's death and the guy who shot him claims self-defense.

"The homeowner says that he was protecting himself and so we are looking into that. The homeowner was there when we got there," said Frankfort Police Deputy Chief Scott Shoemaker.

Shortly after 10 p.m., police were called to the 300 block of Bunnell St., in Frankfort, Indiana, where they found a male victim with at least one gunshot wound on the sidewalk. The victim was in an upstairs apartment above Welty Custom Exteriors in Frankfort, according to investigators on the scene.

The deceased was identified as Kevin Huffer, 37, of Frankfort.

Frankfort police said the man who lives at the residence called 9-1-1 to report that he'd just shot an intruder. Officers attempted life-saving measures, but the man died. Police described the case as an active death investigation and said they'd detained the shooter.

Police say the man who fired those gun-shots told investigators that Huffer attacked him outside of his apartment Tuesday night.

The shooter claims Huffer then followed him into the hallway of his apartment where the shots were fired.

Neighbors tell us they heard four to five gunshots then saw Huffer on the ground.

"They had him out right in front of the building just pumping his chest," said neighbor Krista Scatland.

Right now, police are working to figure out what happened in the moments leading up to the shooting.

"We are not going to classify this as a home invasion yet because I can not definitively say what their connection was. Was there an altercation out front? How did they get inside? We do not know," said Deputy Chief Scott Shoemaker.
