Man arrested in connection with Lawrence murder case
LAWRENCE, Ind. – Lawrence police made an arrest in connection with a homicide case from last week.
According to the Lawrence Police Department, Kaelon Washington, 21, is charged with murder and robbery in the death of 43-year-old Kurt Estes.
Police found Estes dead from a gunshot wound to the head at the Landings at 56th Street apartments on Wednesday, Nov. 15. Officers were called there around 3 a.m. for a shots fired call.
Estes suffered from gunshot wounds and blunt force trauma, according to the probable cause affidavit filed in the case. Investigators said Washington’s phone called Estes’ cell phone before Estes was shot. Washington told investigators that he and an acquaintance set up a drug deal and knew Estes would have a large amount of cash on him for the exchange. Estes was then shot.
Investigators found traces of blood on the carpet in Washington’s living room, according to court documents. Washington said an acquaintance shot Estes and that he was inside his apartment when it happened. Another witness told police that Taylor and another man, identified in court documents as Vorn Taylor, both went outside to make the deal.
Estes’ death was the second homicide in Lawrence in 2017, according to Deputy Chief Gary Woodruff.
Woodruff said the investigation into Estes’ shooting is “far from over” and that detectives are continuing their investigation and sharing information with the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office.
