76-year-old woman critically injured after being trapped underneath vehicle following ejection

MADISON COUNTY, Ind. — Authorities in Madison County responded to a serious crash just before noon on Saturday that sent an elderly woman to the hospital in critical condition.

Madison County Sheriff Scott Mellinger confirmed two vehicles were involved in a crash on US 36 just east of Pendleton at around 11:40 a.m.

He said an elderly woman, later identified as Mary Thompson, 76, was ejected from her vehicle and trapped underneath until help could arrive.

Thompson was driving a PT Cruiser and pulled out in front of a jeep when she was hit.

Her injuries did not appear to be life-threatening. She was transported to the hospital with a fractured left leg, possible fractured right leg and a cut on her head.

Her passenger, Stephanie Howell, 38, was also transported with a collapsed lung.

The driver of the Jeep was identified as 56-year-old Maren Westerfield. She was taken to St. Vincent Hospital in Anderson with non life-threatening injuries.
