INDIANAPOLIS, IND. – Police are searching for the driver of a silver-colored Chevy suburban who hit and killed a 61-year-old man on the southside of the city.
“Somebody had to see something,” said business owner Derek Brickler.
Brickler owns the Pizza King on Bluff road which is right across from the crash scene. Brickler tells us he checked the security footage at his restaurant and saw squad cars lined up on the road.
“I check this video to see how business is going and I saw police cars,” said Brickler.
Those officers were called out after 61-year-old Dean Stegemoller was hit and killed while walking on the side of Bluff road near Southport road. Police say the hit and run suspect was behind the wheel of a Silver Chevy suburban at the time of the crash. Investigators believe that SUV has damage to its front passenger side.
“There are a lot of people that walk the streets over here because we are so close to the Kroger,” said Brickler.
We checked out the surveillance video from the Pizza King.
“You can see a lot of tapping on the breaks around 6:20 and then one car actually puts it in reverse,” said Brickler.
That is when police say someone called 9-1-1.
Investigators are working to find the driver, who left behind the victim and several pieces of their SUV.
“I cannot imagine you would hit somebody and not even want to follow up. Even if you had a suspended license…you should do the right thing,” said Brickler.
This is the second fatal hit and run under investigation by IMPD in 2018
While police take a closer look at the surveillance video, detectives need the public to come forward with information. If you have a tip on this case, call crime stoppers at 262-TIPS.
