FISHERS, Ind.- A 15-year-old Hamilton Southeastern High School student is being charged with misdemeanor battery following an alleged assault that happened on school grounds Thursday. The incident sent another 15-year-old boy to the hospital.
“This incident is so horrific I don’t think any of us could even begin to fathom what would be the best punishment for something like this,” said a family friend of the victim, who asked to remain anonymous. She said the mother of the victim gave her approval to speak on the family’s behalf.
“She was pretty distressed” said the family friend, “pretty horrific thing that had happened to her son.”
She said the details of what happened in a locker room before a boys track and field event Thursday afternoon are too graphic to share, but police said the injuries sustained by the 15-year-old victim sent him to the hospital.
“Personally, it sounds more like a bullying type of situation from the details that I’ve heard,” said the friend. She added that the victim is doing better.
“He was able to go to school today and move forward this his life,” she said, “and I think that’s the best thing a victim could ever do.”
Hamilton County prosecutors wouldn’t discuss any aspect of the case, as both boys involved are juveniles. The school district says they are reviewing the matter, and will provide support to everyone involved.
“I am very concerned that there weren’t coaches or teachers or any other parents just within the vicinity that could have helped prevent this in the first place,” said the friend.
She said she also has students who attend Hamilton Southeastern High School and is hoping the incident prompts changes. In the meantime, her main concern is the family of that teenaged victim.
“It’s really more of a private matter with their family,” said the friend, “they’re just trying to heal and figure out what type of treatment is best for their son.”
