A native Midwesterner, Dan Spehler has enjoyed working close to home through the years, covering news in Indiana & Ohio throughout his 14-year career in television.
Back for a second stint in the Circle City, Dan currently anchors Fox 59 News Live at Five, while also covering state government and reporting on other important issues across the state of Indiana.
Spehler comes to Fox 59 from WKRC in Cincinnati, where he served as a reporter/anchor. During that time, he came back to Indiana regularly to cover several major news stories, including the State Fair stage collapse and Super Bowl XLVI.
Previously, he spent several years here in Indianapolis at another local station, covering everything from floods to tornadoes to the Colts’ Super Bowl victory in 2007!
Along with the weekend news team, Spehler & the Fox 59 crew won an Emmy in 2012 for their coverage of the South Side explosion. Dan’s work in Indy has also been honored by the Indiana chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists, and the Indiana Associated Press.
Before first moving to Indianapolis in 2005, Spehler worked at WDTN-TV in Dayton, Ohio, where he anchored the daily 5:30 p.m. newscast and reported for the 11p.m. news. While at WDTN, Spehler was honored to receive both an Emmy nomination and a first-place award for investigative reporting from the Ohio Associated Press, for investigating the circumstances surrounding a botched drug raid that led to a young man’s death. Another story of Spehler’s even helped change Ohio law, when he discovered that a new law prohibiting sex offenders from living near schools was not being properly enforced.
Prior to working in Dayton, Spehler was a weekend anchor/reporter for WUPW-TV in Toledo, Ohio. His work there was also recognized by industry leaders with two more Ohio Associated Press Awards.
Spehler is a graduate of Bowling Green State University and while there, served as general manager/news director for BG 24 News, the campus television station.
Proud new parents, Dan and his wife Kristi are thrilled to be back in the Circle City – they met here in Indianapolis, and got married in 2010.
