ZIONSVILLE, IND — A Central Indiana developer is hoping to convince the residents of Zionsville to allow it to turn a longtime family owned farm into a $90 million mixed use property.

The Pittman family farm is 62 acres of beautiful countryside that sits on the corner of Sycamore Street and Michigan Road. Steve Pittman with Pittman Partners LLC remembers bailing hay with his father.

“My dad would basically say put your work clothes on we’re gonna go work at the farm,” said Pittman.

Now he and his brother Chad Pittman want to build a 120,000 square foot development that will appropriately called “The Farm at Zionsville.”

“We hope to have a specialty grocer… have a breakfast place, maybe a micro-brewery, maybe a place where families could come and hang out,” said Pittman as he looked around the property.

The project would also include office space, 400 residential units and six estate homes all while keeping with the natural beauty people are used to seeing right now. Pittman said that is important to his family.

“We don’t want to come out here and just flatten this site and make it this big retails strip center,” he told Fox 59. “We wanna work with the grades and let the properly fall naturally and drain naturally.”

But his dreams won’t be realized without Zionsville’s approval. Just this year, the town squashed plans to build a Walmart just down the road from the Pittman Farm, because it didn’t fit with the town’s essence.

Some residents we talked to were open to the idea, but others wondered if Zionsville was the right market for a condo development?

“Something like that could either help by drawing in professional or not survive because there aren’t very many young people staying around,” said one resident.

Pittman said he understands that concern, but “We’re not gonna come out here and start building things if there’s not demand.”

The Zionsville Planning Commission will review the proposal on June 17th and make a recommendation to the Town Council.

Pittman said if things go as planned, work could start in 2014 and the project would take up to five years to be completed.

MIAMI – The fans-as in the past-were donned in uniform T-Shirts hoping to produce a “White Hot” atmosphere.

Yet this seemed like a series that, frankly, wouldn’t need such cliché giveaways to generate excitement much less intensity.

After all, the seven games in front of the Pacers and the Heat are for an Eastern Conference Championship and a shot for an NBA Championship. On top of that, the team’s almost a year-to-the-day removed from a physical six-game series that brought players to the brink of blows on several occasions.

But Wednesday’s opening game represented a pair of teams in different circumstances and in different positions than a year before. Changed weren’t wholesale, but the general consensus was that the squads that were on the floor were better than those 365 days ago.

They proved it in an entertaining opening act, fighting back-and-forth for the lead for the better part of 48 minutes. But in the end it was LeBron James who hit the game-winning shot with no time remaining in overtime to beat the Pacers 103-102.

James finished with a triple-double with a game-high 30 points along with ten rebounds and ten assists. Paul George led the Pacers with 27 and had a pair of dramatic moments late in the contest-sending it to overtime with a three and hitting a trio of free throws in a row with 2.2 seconds left in the extra session that appeared to give the Pacers a win.

That, of course, was before James performed some magic and gave the Heat a 1-0 lead in the series.

Both teams will meet again in Miami for Game Two on Friday night with opening tip at 8:30 P.M.

Frank Vogel’s team got an early test from James who come out of the gate with some momentum, hitting 4-of-5 shots to open the game for nine quick points and a four-point lead midway through the first half. Indiana was able to keep pace with who led all scorers in the first 12 minutes with ten points.

Roy Hibbert briefly gave the Pacers a lead with a slam in the final 25 seconds, but Chris Andersen’s slam with five second to go in the quarter gave the Heat the advantage after one. On the ensuing Pacers possession, George threw it to the corner looking for Hill but he threw it out-of-bounds, giving the ball back to the Heat. Ray Allen split a pair of free throws after a Pacers foul to make the lead three with 17 seconds to go.

West continued his strong offense in the second half, scoring eight more points in the first 7:30 of the quarter to put the Pacers back ahead. Hibbert’s 20-foot jumper with 2:53 to go helped the Pacers push the lead out to seven as Indiana continued to keep the crowd restless.

Even with West out of the game late in the half, the Pacers continued to play well underneath. For the first 24 minutes they outrebounded Miami 19-12-including 6-3 on the offensive glass-and used 11 points from Hibbert to lead by five at the break.

Miami upped the defensive pressure early in the second half and it paid off early. The Heat went on a 12-2 run to start the quarter and a James’ jumper gave the home team a quick five-point lead at 49-44. But the Pacers were undeterred by the added Heat intensity and fought their way back to the lead on a pair of Tyler Hansbrough lay-ups at the 4:43 mark of the quarter.

The fourth-year forward finished with eight points and six rebounds in the quarter as the Pacers maintained a one-point advantage after the third quarter.

In the fourth the Heat got out to a three-point lead at a number of times throughout the quarter but were continually met with responses by the Pacers to tie it up. Miami got ahead by four for a bit on a Wade’s layup-but a George three-pointer cut it back down to one just seven seconds later.

West completed the mini-comeback with 50 seconds left, driving inside for a lay-up to get the score even at 89. Wade got the Miami the lead back ten seconds later with hit own lay-up and the Pacers took an immediate timeout. On the ensuing possession, the Pacers worked the ball around the George, who launched a 25-foot free throw to tie the game with .7 left. Allen’s desperation three-pointer was off the mark as the game went to overtime.

George continued the momentum into overtime, giving the Pacers the lead in a critical sequence halfway through. First the forward forced a Miami 24-second violation after tipping the ball away from Wade and on the ensuing possession he got a bucket and a foul to put Indiana up by three. The Heat would tie it back up with 49 seconds to go when Bosh got a tip in off a missed three-pointer and was fouled and hit a free throw to eve n the game at 99.

James made his presence felt in the final seconds, driving inside for the lay-up for the go-ahead bucket with ten seconds to go. Then George made something happen again, getting a loose ball and getting off a three, drawing a foul from Wade. He would calmly hit all three free throws to give the Pacers a one-point lead with two seconds left.

But James had one more chance and he took advantage. He took the inbounds pass from Battier and drove the lane and got the lay-up at the buzzer to give the Heat the win as the NBA’s MVP scored both inside buckets with Hibbert on the bench.

It was the completion of a classic game in what could be a classic Eastern Conference Finals.

Our cellphones are one of our most personal belongings, but they could also be a public hazard and make you sick.

Fox59 Investigated what all of that swiping and scrolling was doing by choosing random subjects, swabbing their cellphones and sending those tests to the lab.

We even tested the guy who is on his phone nearly 24-hours a day. Colts Punter Pat McAfee takes his phone everywhere, including the bathroom.

“I’m a little nervous for this,” said McAfee as Fox59 swabbed his phone. “I try to keep it as flashy as possible. So I never use – I do like the old breath, like old CD’s?”

We sent the tests to HML Labs in Muncie and our results were disgusting. Scientists count every single colony of bacteria and found several phones had unusually high counts of coliform, bacteria found in our intestines or fecal matter. One phone had more than 600 counts of coliform.

“Maybe they’re gonna think twice about when they go to the bathroom. You know maybe you could wash your hands once in a while,” said Dr. Donald Hendrickson, president of HML Labs.

Dr. Hendrickson said our results prove cellphones can make people sick. Different types of bacteria and viruses can live on our phones and give us the flu, pinkeye and even acne. At worst, those germs can lead to serious complications for patients with low immune systems. And our personal habits and the way we use our phones can contribute to an outbreak.

“The phone is the most common thing we use and we use fingers with it all the time,” said Dr. Hendrickson. “You could transmit a disease yeah. It’s a very good source of transmission.”

Some of our Guinea Pigs also had the staphylococci bacteria, which can lead to Staph infections.

Others, including McAfee’s, did not reveal any signs of that bacteria or coliform.

Many people use sanitizing wipes on their phones, but Dr. Hendrickson recommends using something as simple as rubbing alcohol, which often times works the best. Another good cleaning solution is called MonoFoilClean: http://monofoilclean.com/

The greatest spectacle in racing could quickly become the biggest headache for parking. There are big changes for the race this year, both inside and outside the track, which could have you driving in circles.

With more than 200,000 people about to set foot at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, finding a free parking spot used to be a free-for-all.

This year, only 1,400 Speedway residents with parking permits will be allowed to park on side streets running from 10th to 16th Streets and from Main to Lynhurst. It goes into effect from 3 a.m. to 6 p.m. from Friday to Sunday.

“We’ve had a fellow come and stayed with us from Sweden one time,” said Debbie Rush, who’s lived in Speedway her whole life. “To say you can’t come to a public street and park, it’s a little unwelcoming.”

Rush said welcoming race fans from around the world has always been a part of the town’s culture.

Speedway Town Manager, Barbara Lawrence, said the pilot program is a way to ensure some street parking is reserved for neighbors. Despite the new restrictions, residential yard parking is still allowed.

“We are a race crazy community. We love the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. We love welcoming our guests,” said Lawrence. “We just want to balance our hospitality with the availability of parking spaces and the ease of access for our residents.”

Lining up in the early morning won’t guarantee you a spot inside IMS either. All in-field front row spaces are sold out. You must also have a pre-paid parking pass to get under the bridge.

“This year, a lot of people are going to be very upset,” said Dustin Brown, a Bloomington race fan. “Luckily, I’ve met some friends I can stay with and shuttle together, but not everybody can do that. It’s going to be tough.”

IMS officials believe it’s a way to relieve traffic and enhance security at the track.

“It actually allows us to know who’s bringing a vehicle in the IMS,” said Doug Boles, IMS Spokesman. “Before, folks could get in, pay their general admission ticket, come in, we have no idea who it is or what they’re doing.”

As of this week, IMS’ North 40 lot still has 250 reserved parking spots for $25 each and 750 spots for free. The Coke lot on the northwest corner off of 30th street also has free parking.

They claim Carbon Motors owes them more than $600,000 in salary money, which was promised but never paid.

Carbon Motors came to Connersville back in 2009 with plans to launch a facility, making high-tech police cars.

They claimed they would bring 1,500 jobs to the area. Production never started after the company lost out on a $300 million federal loan.

Carbon Motors officially moved out of Connersville in March after its lease ended.

The city of Indianapolis is honoring two EMS employees who died in the line of duty. Wednesday was the first McCormick and Medley Public Safety Awareness Day.

The event, which was held at the City Market, honors Private Tim McCormick and Specialist Cody Medley. Both were killed when another driver crashed into their ambulance back in February.

The event took the form a fair, with booths about different divisions of public safety. There was also a memorial booth dedicated to the men.

“His dad and I have just been overwhelmed by the love and support and the fact that people remember him. He was a young guy, 24 years old, and that positive things are coming out of this is really what we love,” said Rosemary McCormick, Tim McCormick’s mother.

Officials wanted to honor their fallen brothers during National EMS Week, which runs through this Friday.

The driver who crashed into the men, Jade Hammer, will not face criminal charges for the accident.

New information has been released about a dog that attacked and killed a 6-month-old puppy at a northeast side apartment complex.

That dog, named “Apollo,” will not have the chance to be adopted again if Indianapolis Animal Care and Control has its way. Ultimately, a judge will decide what will happen next.

As the weather gets nicer more dog owners will be grabbing leashes and taking their dogs out for a stroll. If you plan to head out the door with your dog, experts say you need to have a plan.

Tina Mendenhall loves her dog Macy. Macy loves the warm weather.

“When it is like this he loves it,” said Mendenhall. “This (weather) and cooler.”

Warmer temperatures means more dogs, more dogs means an increased chance one will attack another.

“It is unfortunate,” said Mendenhall.

It starts with one dog getting too aggressive, aggressive enough to fight. There has been a deadly dog attack already this year.

“That dog came out of nowhere,” said Tony Yeary. “He was like lightning.”

Two dogs were assaulted. Yeary’s dog, Junior, was killed.

“He dragged Junior to the side of the lake and mauled him relentlessly,” said Yeary. “Shaking him and bitting him. Junior was looking at me and I could not help him.”

IndyHumane Canine Trainer Connie Swaim said most dog attacks can be diffused if owners will take one important step.

“I never let my dogs go nose-to-nose with another dog on a walk,” said Swaim. “It is very stressful for a dog to meet another dog. It also forces the dogs to meet head-to-head, eye-to-eye which is very confrontational to dogs.”

Swaim said teaching dogs one, simple command could be a life saver.

“If your dog has (training), it is much more difficult for your dog to be distracted and think, ‘Oh, I better check out what that other dog is doing,’” said Swaim.

“You have just got to know your dog,” said Mendenhall. “Training is the best, I recommend that from the time they are a puppy and have them take puppy classes – socialization, not only with other dogs, but with people as well.”

Swaim said having a bag of treats in your pocket is always a good idea to also help deter and diffuse the situation. She also said to remember that although lovable, dogs are unpredictable, so you need to be ready for almost anything.
